There are millions of blogs on the internet. Some of them like to stand out by stirring up a bit of trouble. After all, controversy can be very good for business.

As  William Hazlitt  has put it, “When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to be a subject of interest.”

But you want to be a nice troublemaker; no one likes a meanie. Take it too far and they’ll desert you in droves.

Here’s how to be an excellent online rabble-rouser:

Be Passionate

Show your passion for your subject, but don’t ram your opinion down people’s throats. Give them solid reasons why they should agree with you and they will.

Mix It Up

If your niche is full of the same thing hundreds of times over, your audience will get bored. Variety is the spice of life even on the Internet.

Spread the Word

If one of your friends buys something eye-poppingly amazing, the first thing you’ll ask is where they got it. Word of mouth is king. It turns one satisfied customer into two with very little effort.

Run your blog the same way. If your readers ask questions, answer them. According to About.com, “Readers want to feel connected to you.”

Bloggers Are Humans, Too

You’ll find all sorts of personalities online. In your blog comments, writing on other sites, everywhere you look.

The controversy courters will be out there, too! Treat them like humans, address their concerns, find out what issues they’re commenting on and talk about them. Before you know it, you’ll be their first port of call.

Be Assertive (But Not Too Assertive)

If you’re constantly telling people they’re wrong they won’t like it. Express your opinion, but don’t stomp all over other people while you’re at it. The blogosphere can be a lonely place.
